Frequently Asked Questions

Health & Materials

- Why is glass safer than plastic for drinking?

Plastic containers can shed microplastics and leach chemicals like BPA,PFAS, and others into your drink over time, especially when exposed to heat, acidic beverages, repeated washing, UV degradation, or abrasion. Glass is a natural material and is more chemically inert, meaning it doesn’t react with your drink or break down with use.

- Does VITRI glass contain BPA, PFAS, or other harmful chemicals?

No. VITRI is made from borosilicate glass, which contains no plastics, coatings, or chemical additives. Nothing but glass touches your drink.

- Can plastic bottles leach microplastics into my drink?

Studies have found that plastic bottles can shed microplastic particles into drinks, particularly when exposed to heat, UV rays, or physical wear over time. The long-term health effects of microplastic ingestion are still being studied, but the presence of microplastics in drinking water and food containers has become a growing area of concern.

- Why doesn't VITRI use silicone gaskets or seals?

While silicone isn't technically a plastic, it is a synthetic, man-made material like plastic, and it comes with its own set of drawbacks. Silicone can release siloxanes, which are linked to cancer, reproductive and developmental toxicity, endocrine disruption, and liver toxicity. For these reasons the chemicals are regulated in the EU. Silicone is porous and absorbs flavors over time, leaching them back into your next drink. Gaskets and seals also create hard-to-reach areas where moisture collects and mold can grow. Staying on top of it requires regularly removing the gasket and cleaning both the gasket and the surface beneath it. VITRI's all-glass lid uses no silicone, rubber, or plastic seal of any kind.

- Does glass affect the taste of my drink?

No. Glass is taste-neutral, meaning it won’t impart any flavor to your drink. Plastic and metal containers can subtly influence taste over time, particularly with repeated use. With glass, you’re tasting your drink and nothing else.

- What type of glass does VITRI use, and is it food safe?

VITRI is made from borosilicate glass, a high-durability glass known for its thermal stability and chemical resistance. It’s the same material used in laboratory glassware and high-end kitchen equipment. Borosilicate glass is fully food safe. It is so safe and has such a long history in food applications that the FDA doesn't even require it to undergo food contact review.

Product & Care

- Is VITRI dishwasher safe?

We recommend handwashing VITRI cups and tumblers with a non-abrasive sponge or brush. This keeps the finish looking its best and reduces the risk of contact with other items in the wash. If you do use a dishwasher, top rack only and skip the high-heat and drying cycles. The glass lid and straws are dishwasher safe.

- How do I clean the glass lid and straws?

The glass lid and straws are dishwasher safe. For handwashing, avoid abrasive scrubbers which can scratch the surface over time.

- Can I use VITRI with hot and cold drinks?

Yes. Borosilicate glass handles both hot and cold beverages without issue. The double-wall construction helps maintain your drink’s temperature and keeps the exterior comfortable to hold. This product is insulated, contents may be hotter than expected by touching the outside. Exercise caution to prevent scalding.

- Will the glass crack or shatter if I drop it?

Borosilicate glass is more resistant to thermal shock and impact than standard glass, but it is still glass. A significant drop onto a hard surface can cause it to break. We recommend handling VITRI with care. The sandblasted grip band helps with secure handling, especially when wet.

- How do I get rid of water spots or cloudiness on my glass?

Water spots and cloudiness are typically caused by mineral deposits from hard water. A rinse with diluted white vinegar will dissolve most buildup. Let it sit for a few minutes, then rinse thoroughly with clean water.

- What size is the VITRI tumbler and how much does it hold?

The VITRI tumbler holds 12 oz without the lid and 10 oz with the lid seated. It stands 175mm (6.9 in) tall with a 70mm (2.75 in) diameter and fits most standard cup holders. Starting hot drinks with the lid off gives it time to cool to the perfect temperature before sealing it in with the all-glass lid.
